There's no question that Google Maps has the market cornered on directions. If you handed me a paper map and told me to find my way somewhere, I'd start the journey by giving up and going home.
Google Street View makes things even easier, giving you the chance to see the streets at eye-level before you ever leave. All that magic happens by way of Google's fleet of Street View cars, which are mounted with cameras that photograph 8 images at a time in different directions, giving you a lifelike view of the street in question.
Google does its best to keep up-to-date so they're always driving around in cars (as well as tricycles, snowmobiles, boats, and walking on foot). And, since people by and large don't have advanced warning that Google's on its way, they're bound to capture images that people wouldn't want you to see.
The following is a collection of the most absurd and funny images attributed to Google Street View. We can't say for certain that they're all authentic but life's a lot more fun if we assume they are.
1. When your groceries matter more than a cat
I've got to imagine the cat got out of this situation pretty quickly but it's unfortunate that the photo looks like the woman is ignoring it as it prepares for a Mufasa-style plunge.
2. Google Sesame Street View
There's no way this hapened by accident. Why is this man in a garbage can? What city is putting out such tiny public trash bins? I have questions!
3. Took me a second to figure out what was weird about this one
Apparently this guy and the cat (Nicholas) who sits on his head are something of a local legend in Chinatown in New York City.
4. Apparently kids these days don't like Gumby
Where did those sandals even come from? Are they attacking Gumby with his own shoes?
